The Lip Massage Guide has not been produced by doctors but is based solely on the experience of what other women do. If you are unsure, please contact your GP.

The guide has been developed for use with a Lip vibrator, but if you do not have one or prefer not to use a vibrator, you may replace it with a finger. If you would like to purchase a Vulva Lip Kit, you can find it in our e-shop.

In the guide you will find

Lip Massage Guide

Preparing the tissue for massage if you are very red, for example due to untreated lichen sclerosus

The difference between types of emollients (cream, oil, balm)

Other aids that may contribute to vulval care

Lip Massage Guide

Apply a mild emollient. Read further down about the difference between creams, oils and balms.

You may use a Lip vibrator or a finger to massage the tissue. A Lip vibrator differs from a finger in that it is less rough and has no nail. The surface of the Lip vibrator is made of silicone and will feel smooth and soft during the massage. The surface of the Lip vibrator is larger, allowing you to work a bigger area more quickly, meaning you will finish in less time.

Sit either on the toilet or in bed, and use a mirror if helpful. Apply emollient to the vibrator and switch it on. If you are not entirely sure about the anatomy of the vulva, read Check Your Genitals first.

Vulva from clitoris to anus

A

First place the vibrator lengthwise along the outer side of the labia. Vibrate briefly for about 10 seconds to increase blood circulation in the tissue. Then place the vibrator on the inner side of the labia along the vaginal opening and vibrate briefly for about 10 seconds. Change sides.

B

Place the vibrator horizontally at the top of the inner labia. Gently and loosely glide or roll the vibrator in a vertical movement down along the inside of the labia from above the clitoris towards the anus. Repeat a couple of times. Change sides. Then place the Lip vibrator lengthwise along the inside of the labia and gently glide or roll it across the labia. Repeat a couple of times. Change sides.

C

Glide and roll the Lip vibrator around the edge of the vaginal opening, first on one side and then on the other.

D

Place the vibrator along the clitoral shaft and roll it to one side and then to the other.

E

Place the tip of the vibrator between the clitoris and the urethra and gently roll from side to side.

F

Finally place the vibrator on the inside of the perineum, that is inside the vagina pointing down towards the anus. Imagine a clock face where the anus is at 6 o’clock and the clitoris at 12 o’clock. Roll back and forth between 4–5 o’clock and 7–8 o’clock. Gently contract and, on relaxation, press slightly into the perineum. You may need to support the tissue with a finger.

H

Lastly place the vibrator on the outside of the perineum and roll from side to side.

Always wash the Lip vibrator thoroughly before and after use. Wash it with water and soap and rinse well, or use a suitable cleansing product.

How often should I use the Lip Massage Guide

This is not known, but to begin with try working the tissue a little every day for two weeks. In the third week you may choose to reduce to every other day. After three weeks, assess whether you have noticed any effect.

You will probably find that working the tissue only once or twice a week is not enough to notice an effect. If it is difficult to find time to work the tissue for three to five minutes each day, you may on some days work the whole area and on other days focus only on particularly vulnerable areas.

This is an area where we do not have factual knowledge about whether it works or how it works, so you must feel your way forward and sense what makes sense for you, and from there create your own meaningful Lip Massage Guide.

Do you have lichen sclerosus

If you have lichen sclerosus and experience tightness and discomfort in the tissue and would therefore like to try massage, you need to separate treatment with corticosteroid cream and lip massage. If you apply corticosteroid cream in the morning, you may choose to work with lip massage in the evening, or vice versa.

It will be time consuming at first, but it is an effort you need to prioritise initially in order to find out whether it is meaningful for you.

Preparing the tissue for use of the Lip Massage Guide

Some women will have tissue that is too delicate to use a Lip Massage Guide. If that is the case, you must first strengthen the tissue. You may start by using emollients, or if you are undergoing medical treatment, for example for lichen sclerosus, you may wait until your corticosteroid treatment has taken effect.

Your tissue may be sore, delicate and inflexible. If it is still too much, for example to roll the vibrator over the tissue, begin by simply placing it on the tissue with vibration. You may gently rock the vibrator, but do not be too forceful. You may also read the article When You Tear During Sex and Feel Burning on Touch.

Types of emollients

Choose a balm, mild cream or oil that does not absorb too quickly into the tissue when using a vibrator. An emollient should ensure that unnecessary friction is not created in the tissue.

A cream may be based on mineral oils, such as Dr Warming and Repair Cream. Mineral oils do not penetrate the tissue; they form a film over the tissue, rather like placing cling film over it. This is their greatest quality. They protect the tissue from external friction. The film makes it more difficult for moisture to evaporate from the tissue.

Oils vary in how well they penetrate the tissue. Some oils absorb quickly and others less so. Unlike mineral oils, plant oils also contain active components such as vitamins and fatty acids. You will need to try what works best for you, as there is no single clear answer.

Vulva Lipoil

Vulva Lipoil consists of oils that do not absorb quickly into the tissue. This means that Lipoil provides a natural barrier that slows evaporation from the tissue and offers excellent glide when, for example, rolling the Lip vibrator over the tissue as described in the Lip Massage Guide. At the same time, Lipoil consists of natural, cold pressed ingredients so that their important properties remain intact.

Moringa oil, which has a high content of oleic acid, promotes a strong skin barrier. The oil is of high quality and Danish produced in Africa.

Jojoba oil is the oil that most closely resembles the skin’s own sebum, the natural coating the body produces to protect the skin. The oil, which is technically a wax, therefore contributes to protection of the skin. It is also antibacterial and anti inflammatory.

Apricot kernel oil is a light and softening oil with a high content of vitamin E.

There is no use of parabens, preservatives or other chemicals.

Vulva Lipoil can be applied over Vulva Lipbalm. It can be purchased as a discounted bundle.

Vulva Lipbalm

Vulva Lipbalm is produced to strengthen, soften and moisturise the tissue from above the clitoris all the way down around the anus. The balm consists of organic shea butter and hemp seed oil, in other words it contains vitamins A and E and omega fatty acids.

Vulva Lipbalm should be warmed between two fingers before application. The balm has a higher content of fatty acids and vitamins.

Other aids

Dilators may be used to keep the vaginal opening open. Dilators can, among other things, be used to work with tense pelvic floor muscles and in some cases pain related to sex. Read how to use a dilator.

Super vulva briefs with padding. If you are a cyclist or have particular situations where you need more cushioning, read more about briefs with padding.

Silicone based lubricant for penetrative sex. Penetrative sex can be demanding on the tissue. A water based lubricant or an oil is not always sufficient. We have received positive feedback on Lubrasilk lubricant.

If you experience tension in the pelvic floor, read the article When Pelvic Floor Muscles Affect Your Sex Life.

Lip Massage Guide is for those who would like inspiration on how to massage their vulval tissue, that is, the tissue from above the clitoris down to the anus.
